Dallas Baptist University (DBU) – Day 1 CPT Overview

Dallas Baptist University (DBU), a private Baptist institution in Dallas founded in 1898, offers one of the more appealing Day 1 CPT (Curricular Practical Training) options for international students—particularly for specific graduate programs. Unlike most universities that require completing a full academic year before becoming eligible for CPT, DBU allows qualifying students to begin practical training from the very first day of their program.

What is Day 1 CPT at DBU?

Day 1 CPT is designed for students enrolled in programs where internships or practicums are an integral, mandatory part of the curriculum. DBU’s Designated School Official (DSO) can authorize off-campus work if it directly relates to your coursework. Once approved, you’ll receive a new I-20 with CPT authorization, allowing you to begin working legally from day one without delays in processing.

Who Qualifies?

  • New F-1 students (not transfers or current F-1 holders) are eligible for Day 1 CPT if they enroll in the MS in Information Technology and Management – Professional Track, a STEM-designated, 36-credit master’s program.
  • Transfer F-1 students or those currently on OPT may also be eligible for Day 1 CPT when enrolling in other qualifying graduate programs such as STEM MBA, MS Accounting, MS Finance, MS Supply Chain Management, MA International Studies, and others.

Program Format

DBU operates on a trimester system—Spring, Summer, and Fall—with hybrid/blended classes. These classes require on-site attendance every 1–2 weeks, typically in the evenings or on weekends, offering flexibility for working professionals.

How to Apply for CPT

  1. Enroll in an eligible graduate program with an internship or practicum requirement.
  2. Secure a job offer that aligns with your academic field.
  3. Access DBU’s Immigration Portal and submit your CPT application, including your job offer letter and other required documents.
  4. Wait for CPT approval and your updated I-20 before starting employment.

Important Considerations

  • You must maintain full-time enrollment (usually 9 or more credits per trimester) and meet all immigration requirements.
  • Unauthorized work before CPT approval is a serious violation of visa regulations.
  • Full-time CPT (more than 20 hours/week) is permitted during academic breaks, while part-time CPT (up to 20 hours/week) is allowed during regular academic terms.
